The greater San Francisco Bay Area has a high likelihood of future damaging earthquakes as it straddles the San Andreas fault system—the major geologic boundary between the North American and Pacific tectonic plates. Additionally, Sonoma County could sustain impacts from the Hayward faults which extends up the east side of the San Francisco Bay. Knowing how to prepare for an earthquake and what to do during an incident with extended destruction can be lifesaving.
